Relocating to Seattle? Here is a great "Seattle Survival Guide"

Relocating to Seattle?  I  moved to Seattle in the fall of 1994, without any real reason beyond just wanting to live in Seattle.  A few months before my actual move, I was in a bookstore and found a book called "Seattle Survival Guide II"   This was a great resource (remember, this was pre-internet!) for me to scout out Seattle before making The Big Move.

Seattle Survival Guides, both II and 4th edition

 Recently, I was at another bookstore and found a nifty little book called "Seattle Survival Guide. 4th edition".   Hmmm, I picked it up and checked it out.  It reminded me vaguely of my old, and very dog eared guide and introduction to Seattle, so I decided to buy it and see.  Well, the 4th edition is the grown-up and web friendly version, and definitely another great resource for those who are considering moving to Seattle

Both books are laid out very similarly with neighborhoods, companies, schools, and more.  The fun thing for me was noticing the differences between when I first moved to Seattle and the way things are now, a few differences:

"Seattle Survival Guide II" (1993)

* Street addresses.

* Seattle neighborhoods (the ones I call Seattle's Urban Villages ).

* Top 5 companies: 1) Boeing, 2) Weyerhaeuser , 3) Costco , 4) Nordstrom , 5) Safeco

   Next 5: 6) Microsoft , 7) Paccar, 8) McCaw Cellular , 9) Univar, 10) Airborne .  Special note for a "New Kid on the Block - Starbucks ", and notice no Amazon.com since the company wasn't founded until 1994.

"Seattle Survival Guide 4th" (2005)

* Internet addresses.

* Seattle, plus the Eastside, surrounding Seattle Cities in King County, Tacoma, Bainbridge and Vashon Islands.

* 13 top companies alphabetically: Alaska Airlines , Amazon.com , Boeing , Costco,  Expeditors International , Microsoft , Nordstrom , Paccar , Puget Sound Energy , Safeco , Starbucks , Washington Mutual (WaMu), and Weyerhaeuser .

When I was considering moving to Seattle, "Seattle Survival Guide II" was very helpful giving me some insight on what to expect when I was relocating to Seattle.  I would really recommend this 4th edition of the book...hey, I just picked up a copy and I live here!

Good blog, thank you, Deborah!  We should have something like this for my area.  Maybe I'll put it together.  Thanks for the idea!

Good suggestions, Deborah. Once you have relocating buyers go to contract, you might want to buy it for them and send it to them.

Hi Mirela - Thank you, and you're welcome!

Hi Sharon - Thank you.  Yes, now that I know of this updated edition I will.  I have a Seattle book for clients with children that I like to give out as well.
